DISCOVER ALESSANDRIA BARRIER-FREE - BORGO ROVERETO AND THE CITADEL BY E-TRIKE, ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE
01 September 2026 - 31 December 2027
Welcome to Alessandria, an ideal destination for curious travellers who wish to discover its elegant character, thousand-year history and outstanding craftsmanship. The purpose of this tour is to offer an inclusive and accessible cultural experience, free from barriers and designed to be fully enjoyed by all visitors, including people with reduced mobility and those with motor or sensory needs.
Our tour winds through the historic district of Borgo Rovereto and the Citadel of Alessandria and joins a series of unforgettable stops, where accessibility meets beauty:
Gambarina ethnographic museum: "C'era una Volta" ethnographic museum of Alessandria is housed in a former military barracks dating back to the 18th century called “Gambarina Vecchia” and owned by the Municipality. The exhibition space extends over two floors and covers approximately 1600 square meters.
The ground floor, which makes use of the original bay layout of the former stables, offers an evocative visitor route through a series of reconstructed settings illustrating key moments in the public and private life of the rural communities between the 19th and 20th centuries. The upper floor features a 1930s classroom and a library containing books dating back to the early 19th century. The ethnographic section is completed by an extensive collection of dolls and toys from different periods and the display cases illustrate the development of Alessandria's local crafts and industries over the course of a century.
The Citadel of Alessandria: this is one of the largest examples in Europe of a permanent 18th century fortification, one of the few still standing and undoubtedly one of the best preserved in Europe. It is the only 18th-century fortress built by the Savoys on low-lying ground and the only European fortress to have retained its original setting. Today, it is also home to the Museum of Uniforms.
The Mayer Bridge: this bridge connects the city of Alessandria with its Citadel, an 18th century fortress, and historically linked the city with the district of Bergoglio, as early as the Middle Ages. The current bridge is a striking example of contemporary architecture, built between 2012 and 2016.
The City of Alessandria entrusted the architectural design to the American architect Richard Meier, who proposed an ambitious single-span bridge of more than 185 m, supported by a distinctive inclined arch structure designed to neutralize horizontal thrust. At the presentation of the project, Meier highlighted that his intent was not simply to “create a connection between one bank and the other, but also to reconnect the two parts of the city”.
The Church of Santa Maria di Castello: this church is considered one of the symbols of Alessandria's urban history and one of the city’s oldest surviving relics. It became particularly important after the demolition in 1803 of the 12th century Cathedral of Saint Peter, once the city’s principal place of worship. The church stands in the square of the same name and, together with it, forms the heart of Borgo Rovereto, one of the oldest districts in Alessandria's historic center.
The route offers an accessible cycling experience suitable for everyone.
The vehicles used are electrically assisted recumbent e-bikes, which are available to rent from AVIS ALESSANDRIA in Lungo Tanaro San Martino, 4.
Bookings are reserved for people with reduced mobility upon presentation of a valid disability card. Reservations are handled by the tour operators who are part of the Alessandria Incoming project and can be made by contacting the following email address: commerciale@viaeperviaggiare.it
A barrier-free experience: Each stop along the route has been selected not only for its outstanding artistic and cultural value, but also for its high level of accessibility, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience with greater independence and comfort. The businesses, restaurants and accommodation providers in the project form a clearly identifiable network of venues committed to inclusion. Where needed, removable ramps are available to facilitate access and help make the experience welcoming and accessible to all.
Let us guide you on a journey of discovery of an original, welcoming and accessible Alessandria, where traditional craftsmanship, outstanding art and warm hospitality come together in perfect harmony.
The tour can be enjoyed independently, with no need to purchase any additional service. A map of the route is attached.
