Casale Monferrato

The capital of Monferrato, with its art, vineyards, and culture.

Casale Monferrato

A town proud of its history that will welcome you with elegance

Casale Monferrato, one of the most interesting art cities of Piedmont, rises on the right bank of the River Po, a short distance from the foothills of Monferrato. The historic center, enclosed within the polygonal perimeter of the walls which are no longer present, has a prevalently eighteenth-century appearance, though maintaining important medieval, Romanesque and Gothic monuments.

Casale developed from the early 16th century under the aegis of the Gonzaga Dukes of Mantova until annexation to the Duchy of Savoy in 1713; in the 19th century, the city witnessed the Napoleonic invasions and then the wars of independence until Italian Unification, to whiich it contributed with illustrious citizens such as Giovanni Lanza, Filippo Mellana and Urbano Rattazzi. Military stronghold of primary importance, for centuries it was the center of tormented political events which marked the history of the marquisate of Monferrato, of which it was made capital in the 1400s. Strolling through the historic center is the best way to get to know and appreciate its many treasures.

Monferrato embeds its roots in the romantic legend of the medieval Knight Aleramo who conquered this land for love. Recently recognized as UNESCO heritage site for the beauty of its vineyard landscapes, and for the presence of the Infernot (cellars dug in the pietra da Cantoni). The second UNESCO site of the area is the Special Reserve of Sacro Monte di Crea (Sanctuary, 23 chapels and 5 hermitages). Monferrato is a land to discover slowly following the gentle hills exploring the villages and enchanted castles. A magical region for those who love experiencing nature, but also rich in traditions, history, excellent food and wine culture.

The food and wine of Monferrato is known well beyond our Country and boasts many outstanding products: from the raw materials such as hazelnuts and truffles to human transformations: wines, cheeses, cured meats, including cooked salami, the “Muletta monferrina”, the filetto baciato, high quality meats with which to cook the famous bollito or the fritto misto alla piemontese, local desserts including the Krumiri of Casale Monferrato and, of course, the unque vineyards of Monferrato and the wineries where to taste, among others, Grignolino and Barbera.
