DISCOVER ALESSANDRIA BARRIER-FREE - A TOUR FOR EVERYONE
01 September 2026 - 31 December 2027
Welcome to Alessandria, an ideal destination for curious travellers who wish to discover its elegant character, thousand-year history and outstanding craftsmanship. The purpose of this tour is to offer an inclusive and accessible cultural experience, free from barriers and designed to be fully enjoyed by all visitors, including people with reduced mobility and those with motor or sensory needs.
Our tour winds through the heart of the city and joins unforgettable stop-off points where accessibility meets beauty:
Palazzo Rosso: The City Hall of Alessandria is located in piazza della Libertà 1.
Known as Palazzo Rosso, because of the distinctive red color of its facade, the building dates back to the second half of the 18th century. It features an unusual three-face clock. At the top is a rooster which, according to tradition, was taken by the people of Alessandria from Casale in 1225.
Palatium Vetus: this is one of the oldest buildings in the city. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it served as the broletto (town hall) and was the centre of the political, administrative and judicial life of the medieval municipality. Today, thanks to the support of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria and careful restoration by the Gae Aulenti firm which successfully preserved the building’s historic character, it houses a collection of works by local painters and sculptors dating from the late 18th century to the second half of the 20th century.
Mosaics of the Post Office Building: the building is located in piazza della Libertà. Built between 1939 and 1941, it is a fine example of Rationalist architecture. The facade is decorated with a 38m-long mosaic by Gino Severini, depicting the history of telecommunications and the five continents.
San Franceso Museum Complex: Originally a convent, later used as a military barracks and finally as a hospital, the former Church of San Francesco in the convent of Alessandria has served many different purposes over the centuries. More than 25 years of research, conservation and restoration work, together with the major architectural restoration project carried out between 2022 and 2026, have made it possible to recover and reopen this important historic and artistic site. For more than two centuries, it had been inaccessible to the public and largely unknown to many local residents.
A barrier-free experience: Each stop along the route has been selected not only for its outstanding artistic and cultural value, but also for its high level of accessibility, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience with greater independence and comfort. The businesses, restaurants and accommodation providers in the project form a clearly identifiable network of venues committed to inclusion. Where needed, removable ramps are available to facilitate access and help make the experience welcoming and accessible to all.
Let us guide you on a journey of discovery of an original, welcoming and accessible Alessandria, where traditional craftsmanship, outstanding art and warm hospitality come together in perfect harmony.
The tour can be enjoyed independently, with no need to purchase any additional service. A map of the route is attached.
