The business of Reposi calzature in piazza Garibaldi 6 has a long history which goes back to the 19th
century. It all began in the second half of the 19th century, when Enrico Reposi opens a shop in via Mazzini 7: the shoes were handmade and made to measure. The first document which exists on the business is dated 1891, but it was probably founded
earlier.
Enrico's son Pasquale took over the Monti shoemaker’s shop located on via Palazzo di città 6, the current via Verdi,
to continue working as a shoemaker on his own with his wife Francesca, who was a hemmer and had initially
worked in Enrico Reposi’s shop on via Mazzini. In 1902, Pasquale moved to piazza Garibaldi 6 where the shoe store remains to this day: there were five workers and, in addition to shoes, boots were also manufactured for the officers of the Valfrè barracks. The activity of selling shoes produced in the early shoe factories begins later.
An important choice coinciding precisely with the birth of piazza Garibaldi, which was built as a prestigious entrance to the city for those who arrive by train. It was the best face of Alessandria of the Belle Epoque, its symbol. For a dealer, having their
business right here
meant being in the most important and prestigious area
of the city. Pasquale dies during the bombing on 5 April 1945 on his way home from his
shop.
His son Umberto, born in 1891, and grandfather of the current owner, initially worked in Turin and then for several years as head cutter at the Bima shoe factory and continued the family business with his wife Piera, cherishing the extensive knowledge of footwear, of materials, shapes and different construction techniques he had learnt during his
apprenticeship.
In 1955, Riccardo Reposi began his activity of dealer alongside his parents, from 1965 assisted by his wife Angela. In 1973, they opened Reposi junior in Corso Roma, a shop specialized in children’s footwear which closed in 1989. Since 2000, the shop on piazza Garibaldi has been managed by Fabrizio Reposi, second child of Riccardo, who has been helped by his wife Elena since 2005. After partial restyling in August 2003, it was decided to totally renew the premises: after two months of restructuring, the shop was reopened on 13 March 2010. The ability to innovate and adapt to the times is inherent to this merchant dynasty from Alessandria. Since late 2019, there has also been an online sales platform, which works alongside the traditional in-store sales in piazza Garibaldi.
