Santa Maria Island Special Conservation Area
The territory of the Municipalities of Crescentino (VC), Fontanetto Po (VC), Verrua Savoia (TO) and Moncestino (AL) is an interesting site.
It extends along a stretch of the River Po, just downstream of the confluence with the Dora Baltea. The island of S. Maria is bordered on the south by the active riverbed of the River Po and to the north by the Doretta Morta, paleo-riverbed of the Dora Baltea, now primarily fed by spring water. The area is formed by an eco-mosaic including different habitats closely connected to each other. Some are sites of community importance, connected for the most part to the wetlands and riparian areas. It is home to plant species which have become extremely rare in lowland areas.
Natura 2000 network code: IT1120023. Grounded surface (ha): 721,00.
