In the 1900s, Casale Monferrato established itself as Lime and Cement capital of Italy. It was the first town in Italy to develop the industrial production of cement, thanks to the richness and quality of the Monferrato marl, a material naturally suited to producing natural cement, without the need to add corrective substances.


The many historical traces of cement production in the city include the Parabolic silo and the Furnasetta.

The Parabolic Silo, built in 1921, is an 11-metre-high structure, built entirely in reinforced concrete. It was the first parabolic silo constructed in Italy and formed an integral part of the technological cycle of the Italcementi cement plant. The building was used to store clinker, the raw material from which cement is produced. The Parabolic Silo was part of a complex that also included two office buildings and a low structure with chimneys, which no longer exist
.


In 2026, the Parabolic Silo was officially restored and reopened as a cultural urban center, taking on the new role as a "covered square". The structure hosts major cultural events, concerts and performances, with a total capacity of up to 1000 people.
