It is the clothing store par excellence, whose name is
synonymous with elegance. The business name
says “Giovanni Ferraris Sas”,
but writing “Ferrari” 1908 you understand that it is more than one hundred years old. And, as it often happens in these cases, the history is written by people with strength and determination which drives them to give up a job as an employee to search for success through a shop which carries their name. In this case the business is started as a hat factory in October 1908, by Giovanni Ferrari, a laborer of Borsalino who decided to set up his own hat factory. He is helped by his wife Antonietta,
whom he marries in 1904. The first premises is
on via Milano 27, on the corner with
piazza Santo Stefano. The business, as
recites an advertising announcement
on the socialist weekly “the New Idea”
of that year, “sells hats for
men and for ladies produced both
in-house and by the best national companies, carries out work on commission and repairs”.
In 1924, the son Vittorio, born in
1907, works alongside his parents and in 1931
he marries Cristina giving the business
a new and valid collaborator.
In 1947, on the wave of the industrial recovery after the war, Vittorio decides to move the business to a
more central area, via Migliara. In
the meantime, he has joined the sale
of clothing to that of hats.
It is the beginning of a journey which
will lead to our days. After just
five years, in 1952, the enterprising Vittorio purchases the activities of the Lingua firm, in via dei Martiri, the best-known clothing shop
of the city, moving its own headquarters into those which were well-known by the people of Alessandria, fully renovating the store, making it become one of the first “modern” shops in the city.
