Pilgrimage destination for centuries, it is now a combination of structures that date from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on what was the original fifteenth century nucleus.
The current complex originated as a shrine around which the Oratory of San Bernardino was built around 1450, following the passage of Saint Bernardino of Siena on an apostolic pilgrimage.
Over time, a hospice for pilgrims was built and later it became a convent. The eighteenth century saw the most important work of enlargement and transformation take place on the building, turning it into the Sanctuary it is today.
