Volpedo's fame, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is linked to its most illustrious representative, Pellizza da Volpedo, one of the greatest Italian painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. His studio, almost intact after his tragic death, can still be visited, but the entire village commemorates the artist through a series of reproductions that place the paintings in their "natural" settings. In the square dedicated to the Fourth Estate, the positions of the main characters in the work have also been highlighted, and a streetlamp indicates the spot where Pellizza set up his easel.
Volpedo's urban structure has a medieval imprint, still clearly visible in some parts of the town and in the Pieve di San Pietro, a simple church on the outside but richly decorated on the inside with frescoes dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries.
Volpedo has always been a town with a strong agricultural vocation, nestled in a countryside that produces top-quality fruit and vegetables, such as the Princi-pesca, the area's signature peach, particularly large and flavorful. Piazza Perino is the center of the fruit market as well as festivals and fairs, such as the Strawberry Fair, a destination for many lovers of rural produce.
