An ancient feudal village, the earliest records of which date back to the 10th century, first mentioned in the foundation deed of the Abbey of San Quintino di Spigno Monferrato, belonging to the Acqui district.
In 1039, the portion of the territory belonging to the lords of Melazzo was donated by San Guido, bishop of Acqui, to the Acqui episcopate. A century later, the portion of the Monferrato domain was transformed into a fiefdom and, as such, granted to the Malaspina family by Marquis Bonifacio.
Worth a visit is the castle, which preserves the remains of the walls with the Gothic entrance gate, ruins of the palace, and, above all, the slender 14th-century crenellated tower, the remains of the medieval village walls dating back to the 11th century.
Near the cemetery, the remains of a Romanesque apse belonging to a church dedicated to Saint Peter are visible.
Lime quarries are located within the municipality. Nougat is also produced. On the Morbello-Visone road in the Catanzo region is the rural Church of Santa Croce, also known as the Church of the Cappelletta, built in 1595.
