The city was founded in the 2nd century BC with the name Dertona, at the intersection of the Postumia and Fulvia consular roads. Some archaeological remains are still visible today in open-air sites, such as Via Emilia, Via Rinarolo, and Via Arzani. The most precious Roman artifacts, including the monumental white marble sarcophagus of Aelius Sabinus, are housed in Palazzo Guidobono, the municipal exhibition center. The building was built in the 15th century as the stately home of the important noble family, with a tower in the forecourt. Inside, the studio of master puppeteer Peppino Sarina has also been recreated, featuring numerous stage materials from the Puppet Theater.
The town, home to one of the oldest dioceses in northern Italy, boasts numerous religious sites of great historical and artistic importance: in addition to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Lorenzo, we recommend a visit to Santa Maria Canale, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia, with its golden statue visible from afar, and the Diocesan Museum, which houses a precious purple manuscript from the 5th-6th centuries.
A must-see for art lovers is the Divisionism Art Gallery, which houses over eighty works from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including paintings by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo.
A pleasant walk takes you to Colle Savo, now a park, where a tower and some ruins of the castle walls remain, a reminder that part of the medieval city was perched on the hill for defensive reasons.
The area is also famous for its wines, including the DOC Colli Tortonesi and the recently rediscovered Timorasso.
