A small town nestled in the Monferrato hills, the first records of a municipality date back to 1016, the year in which several families rebelled against the church of Vercelli and united under the name of Soalingellum. The village's history is tied to that of the Monferrato region, which was subject to more or less subtle struggles for control and forced to endure oppression by the French and Spanish. Centuries later, in 1713, it became part of the Duchy of Savoy.

The toponym is likely of Germanic origin and is thought to derive from the first name Swal combined with the suffix ing, indicating belonging, and the diminutive elus, resulting in an interpretation that means: small territory belonging to a leader named Swala.
