The characteristic town clusters around a hill on which stands the ancient medieval church, offering a panoramic view. Here, in 1585, the Sarzanese Purple Codex, a collection of Gospels dating from the 5th to 6th centuries, was discovered, along with the remains of the patron saints Ruffino and Venanzio.

The discovery of archaeological finds (coins, Roman brick tombs, amphorae, etc.) suggests that a settlement existed in the Sarezzano area as early as Roman times.
