San Cristoforo is a charming town located in the Alto Monferrato area, in the province of Alessandria, nestled among the Oltregiogo hills, offering a perfect balance of history, nature, and local traditions.
The origins of San Cristoforo date back to the Roman-Augustan era, when the founding of Libarna led to the creation of a road network that included the path that passed through San Cristoforo, the road that led from Libarna to the countryside of the Stazielli, an ancient population belonging to the Ligurian Montani lineage.
In the 10th century, given its strategic position, a tall, solid tower with an irregular polygon, called the Torre del Gazzolo, was built as part of a lookout system. This tower served as a beacon in the dense surrounding woodland and to signal the landing of Saracens on the seashore.
In 1313, Emperor Henry VII granted the territory of San Cristoforo as a fief to Opizzino Spinola, a concession confirmed in 1323. In 1399, the village was definitively assigned to the Spinola family by the Senate of the Republic of Genoa. The wars of the 17th century did not spare the fiefdom of San Cristoforo, which was the scene of bloody and disastrous border wars.
The castle of San Cristoforo, with a quadrilateral layout typical of 15th-century fortifications, extends over four floors and incorporates the ancient Torre del Gazzolo at its northwestern edge. It is enclosed within a fortified wall and is part of a building complex that includes the so-called "Casa Lunga" (the wine cellar), the guesthouse, the parish church, and the stables.
In addition to the castle, other interesting sites include the parish church of San Cristoforo Martire, built in the 16th century; The Church of the Annunziata, built around 1700.
The most prestigious events are the patronal feast of San Cristoforo, celebrated on August 10th with religious celebrations and popular festivities; the Grape Festival, an annual event celebrating the town's winemaking tradition with tastings, music, and dancing; and the Christmas markets, held during the Christmas season in the historic center.
San Cristoforo is nestled in a hilly landscape characterized by vineyards, woods, and scenic trails. The winemaking tradition is still alive, with the production of typical local wines. The town promotes outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, and food and wine tastings.
