Pozzolo Formigaro has ancient origins and, like many villages of Piedmont, its history has been marked by the alternation of different rulers, in particular the Romans, the Lombards, and the medieval lords. The village is close to the River Scrivia and its strategic position has made it important over the centuries for trade and communications between the Po Valley and Liguria.

In the Middle Ages, Pozzolo Formigaro was ruled by the Malaspina family and later the Savoy family, but its main role has always been that of farming and trading. The name itself "Formigaro" appears to derive from "Formiga" which in Latin means formica (ant), recalling the ancient farming tradition connected with the land and its hard work.

Over the centuries, its economy has developed thanks to farming and livestock, but industry has also recently established itself without ever losing its bond with rural traditions.
