Located on the border of Liguria among the Apennine forests, its origins date back to the Middle Ages.

991 – The founding deed of the Abbey of San Quintino di Spigno states that Marquis Anselmo I (son of Count-Marquis Aleramo) and his wife Gisla, a Lombard comitissa, granted the Benedictine monks, among other lands, three "mansi" (approximately nine hectares) in the territory of Pareto. This territory was initially ruled by the Marquises of Vasto, then by the Marquises of Carretto, the Marquises of Ponzone, and finally by the Marquises of Bosco and Pareto.
1125 – Marquis Bonifacio del Vasto (son of Tete, Marquis of Western Liguria) left the "locus et territorium Pareti" (the land and territory of Pareto) to his son Enrico il Guercio, Marquis of Savona.
1162-1202 – Guglielmino del Bosco, son of Manfredo, Marquis of Bosco, married Salumbra, who brought him as a dowry a plot of land called Gli Olmi di San Martino (the olmi of San Martino) in the Pareto area. His sons Enrico and Bonifacio were the first to receive the title of Marquis of "Pereto," meaning Pareto.

The town clusters around the ancient Spinola castle, flanked by the beautiful 17th-century parish church with its graceful Ligurian Baroque façade and various other medieval buildings with loggias and passageways. Also of interest are the 17th-century parish church of San Pietro and the small church of Santa Rosalia.

The mushrooms in the surrounding woods are renowned, and the hamlets of Roboaro and Miogliola in the Erro Valley are interesting.
