The municipalities of Lu and Cuccaro Monferrato merged in 2019.
The village of Lu Monferrato sits in a panoramic position among the hills, a testament to the area's agricultural vocation. The original nucleus was in the Mediliano area, where the parish church of San Giovanni (7th century) stands. However, in the 10th century, thought to be due to frequent Saracen raids, the inhabitants moved to more easily defended hilltops.
Lu is famous for the large number of religious buildings dotting the village and the surrounding countryside. Among the various religious buildings, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Nuova (1479) is noteworthy, which houses a painting by Moncalvo, "The Five Virgins."
The Church of San Giacomo houses a small but interesting Museum of Sacred Art, which includes the sacristy, the church (rebuilt in the 16th century), and the Regency House. It houses paintings by Moncalvo and his daughter Orsola Caccia, valuable goldsmiths' works, and antique fabrics, as well as "The Canons of Lu" by Pietro Francesco Guala, one of the painter's most famous works.
Cuccaro Monferrato became part of the Marquisate of Monferrato in the 14th century; the Colombian Studies Center, dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the presumed relationship between the Columbus family of Cuccaro and the famous navigator, is located here.
Two Big Benches (no. 98 and no. 99) have been installed in Lu-Cuccaro Monferrato, connected by a panoramic walkway from which, in May and June, you can admire the area's famous lavender fields.
