Thanks to its strategic location, the name Dernice, from the Latin "Darnisium," appeared in chronicles as early as 869. The town, which retains distinctly medieval features, including a customs tower, is dominated by a mighty fortified tower within a complex known as the "castle," whose last owners (from 1429 to 1706) were the Ligurian Spinola family. Today, the "castle" and its park are municipal property, open to the public, and offer everyone the opportunity to admire an enchanting panorama.
