Towards the mid-16th century, in the wake of the Wars of Italy, the 13th century building was totally destroyed before it was re-built some time later in its current architectural forms.
The church experienced its greatest artistic splendor in the second half of the 18th century, when the beautiful Baroque-style facade was built.

The "San Giacomo" Museum of Holy Art is located in the premises next to the church.
