"Return to the Tratturo" Screening and Round Table on Internal Areas

Following the screening of the recent documentary Ritorno al tratturo (2026), we are organizing a roundtable discussion open to residents, local organizations, and institutions to discuss the challenges, needs, and opportunities for those who choose to live and work in inland areas.

The documentary retraces the ancient transhumance routes in the Molise hinterland, meeting people who have chosen to stay, return, or start new businesses in rural areas. These encounters reveal a scenario reminiscent of our Apennine region: these experiences face common challenges such as depopulation, the progressive loss of services, and the difficulty of establishing often fragile and isolated initiatives.

Following the screening, which will feature director Francesco Cordio and researcher and member of the Riabitare l'Italia network Filippo Tantillo, we would like to initiate an informal and moderated discussion on how to make inland areas truly habitable and vibrant, what challenges need to be addressed, and what roles the various stakeholders in the area can play.

We're interested in giving space to both the perspectives of institutions and those of the various social networks and organizations born directly from communities. The question we'd like to pose at the heart of the meeting is precisely this:

How can local politics intervene, and through which networks and alliances can we transform still-isolated experiences into real opportunities for the future?
