Complex of San Francesco

The Church of San Francesco represents one of the most important testimonies of medieval Franciscanism in northern Italy. Built in the late Gothic style, the building underwent profound transformations during the Napoleonic era, when it was converted first into a barracks and later into a military hospital. These interventions radically altered the church's original structure: attics, courtyards, and walkways were added, altering the architectural layout and the perception of the sacred space.

Despite the 19th-century transformations, the building still retains important elements of its 14th-century construction, such as terracotta decorations and parts of the original Gothic structures. Recent restoration work has recovered and enhanced many of the surviving historical features, restoring clarity to the interior spaces and bringing to light architectural details hidden over time.

The building's renovation combines historical preservation with new contemporary architectural solutions, with the aim of returning to the community a place of great cultural, artistic, and identity-building value.
