Description

OPEN CASTLES - The Medieval Tower of Terzo

The Terzo Tower dates back to the Middle Ages and is all that remains of the castle's fortified structures, traces of which date back to the 10th century. It was the Malaspina family who, at the end of the 14th century, established themselves in their fiefdoms and began a profound military reorganization. They rebuilt the castle and tower in Terzo according to the most modern standards of the time: differently oriented arrow slits, a sloped base with ashlar corners, and a crenellated parapet on corbels. At the beginning of the 18th century, with the end of the wars, the castle's defensive role ceased, and it remained a simple residence until the early 19th century, when it was completely abandoned and fell into ruin, leaving only the tower as the only visible vestige.

The tower is one of the few structures that can also be visited inside. Access to the top is via a long iron staircase of over 100 steps. From the summit, you can admire a splendid panorama spanning the Bormida Valley, framed by the mountains of the Ovada Apennines in the background, and in the distance, the characteristic villages with their castles stand out.

The new panoramic walk to the "rocche" of Terzo begins from the Tower.
