Serravalle Scrivia is a municipality in the province of Alessandria located in the Novi Ligure region, a geographical area named after the city of Novi Ligure and just a few kilometers from the Ligurian border.
It is a fortified village likely built by the inhabitants of the ancient city of Libarna, a Roman center located on the Via Postumia between Genoa and Tortona.
From 1122, Serravalle Scrivia belonged to the bishops of Tortona, until they ceded it to the Municipality of Tortona in exchange for the defense of their lands. In fact, the toponym Serravalle appears for the first time in a public deed dated 1140, through which the Municipalities of Tortona and Genoa agreed on their borders. The original core of the village closed the gorge of the Scrivia and Crenna valleys, hence Serra Vallis.
Elevated to the rank of imperial fiefdom, Serravalle passed to the Spinola family and other noble families of the time, only to return to them in 1482, retaining their jurisdiction. After the War of the Spanish Succession, it passed to the Austrians in 1713, and in 1738, it became part of the possessions of the Savoy family, along with the Tortona area. During the Napoleonic Wars, it was annexed to the Ligurian Republic; after the Battle of Marengo, it was conquered by the French, who demolished the castle. In 1815, following the Congress of Vienna, Serravalle returned to the Savoy family. In 1863, the municipality of Serravalle took the new name of "Serravalle Scrivia."
Serravalle is an important road junction between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Sea, as it is the quickest route connecting the Ligurian city and the sea with Milan and Turin.
A couple of kilometers from the town center lies the archaeological site of Libarna, a Roman city located on the ancient Via Postumia, where the summer solstice concert takes place in June. Inside the municipal administration building, the exhibition hall on the ground floor houses an exhibition of archaeological finds from the excavations of the Roman city.
Serravalle is best known for the largest outlet mall in Europe, featuring 250 designer stores. It is connected by special buses to Milan, Genoa, and Turin. Furthermore, opposite the outlet is the "Retail Park" with large shops selling a variety of products.
Throughout the year, you can participate in various events and village festivals, including: "Serravalle con gusto," an event celebrating spring; the feast of San Martino, the patron saint, held on November 11; and the Festa della Contrada di Sopra.
