The name and origin of Sardigliano appear to derive from "Sardilius", a nobleman from the ancient Libarna who owned an estate or, more likely, from a legionnaire who was assigned lands in this area.
Later, according to the rules of the time, to indicate the site the name was followed by the suffix (i) anus, which alludes to individual ownership (viritim), which gives way to "Sardilianus".
Sardigliano, had presumably been part of the Bishopric since 979, date of the start of the same. The oldest documented news of the village dates back to 1201, the year in which the priest Rubaldo from Sardigliano, canon of the church of Cassano, was appointed parish priest of the church of Sardigliano.
At that time it was still a simple oratory, already dedicated to the B.V. Mary. Tomeno Berruti, in his "Cronaca di Tortona".
