Rocchetta Ligure is a charming town located in the Borbera Valley, in the province of Alessandria. It boasts a rich history and an urban structure that reflects its past, offering numerous places of interest and vibrant traditions.
The village has medieval origins, but its current layout dates back to 1673, when it was founded as Borgonuovo by Napoleon IV Spinola. The Spinola family, one of the most influential families of the Republic of Genoa, chose this strategic location along the ancient communication route between Milan and Genoa, fostering the town's commercial development thanks to the trade of goods such as wine, cheese, and the prized white bean. The historic center extends along the right bank of the Sisola stream, with buildings that bear witness to the Baroque era and the presence of the Spinola family. The main square, Piazza Regina Margherita, is the beating heart of the town, surrounded by traditional houses and local shops.
Among the places of interest is Palazzo Spinola, built between 1666 and 1678 as the Spinola family's summer residence. This palace is now the town hall and houses the Museum of the Resistance and Social Life in the Borbera Valley. Also nearby is the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which dates back to the 17th century and features a richly decorated interior with a marble high altar, a carved wooden choir, and an 18th-century organ.
The main events are the Sagra della Fagiolana, a food festival held on the second Sunday of September that celebrates the white fagiolana, a typical local legume, and the Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate, which is held on January 17th, featuring religious celebrations and cultural events involving the entire community.
