Ponzano Monferrato came under the control of the Marquises of Monferrato in the 13th century. The village is known for its prestigious castles and historic residences, which house majestic gardens and parks: Ponzano Castle, which preserves its ancient crenellated tower; Salabue Castle, whose origins date back to the mid-14th century; and Villa Larbel, an 18th-century residence built in neoclassical style. The current Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista was built on the ruins of the previous Romanesque church.

The Superga-Vezzolano-Crea route passes through the municipality, leading to the Sacro Monte di Crea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
