Pasturana is an enchanting village in the province of Alessandria, in Piedmont, nestled among the hills of South Monferrato. Its history is deeply rooted in the 10th century, when the monastery of San Salvatore of Pavia obtained ownership of the area in 969. Over the centuries, the village came under the rule of the Marquises of Gavi in the 12th century, the Republic of Genoa in the 13th century and, later, the Marquisate of Monferrato in the 14th century. In 1313, the Emperor Henry 7th granted several areas of the Valle Scrivia and Lemme, including "Castrum et Burgum Pastoranae" as a fief to Opizzino Spinola. In the 16th century, Pasturana became a fief of the Spinola of Tassarolo, and later of the Trotti family of
Milan.
The primitive parish church of Pasturana, dedicated to San Martino, was built in the Lombard age, and later transformed into a Benedictine monastery. In the 16th century, with the arrival of the Trotti of Milan, construction began on a new parish church, using materials from the demolition of the monastery. The ancient church, recently restored, presents a single nave with brick columns and walls partly constructed using the technique of "pisè" (rammed earth).
