Located at the outer reaches of Southern Monferrato, characterized by steep slopes, wooded hillsides and formations of scoured marl gullies that flake away making fossils reappear.
In Merana the geological evolution has created a unique landscape. On the ridges of the hills and on the gullies up to the valley bottom and in the canyons fascinating original country roads and trails wind their way. The trails identified on the territory are different, each with its own characteristics of difficulty and of travel time, but all are ideal for passing delightful hours outdoors admiring fascinating landscapes which are different in every season.

Merana was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, populated by the Ligurian Statielli and later Roman territory from 173 BC. It is mentioned in a document dated 1170 of Archbishop Gualdino and a drawing of 1727 in the Volume Cabreo shows the castle which was later sold by the Marquises of Ponzone to the Del Carretto family. Merana was subjected to the passing of the Spanish army heading to Milan and with the arrival of Napoleon the castle and the old Church were destroyed.
The Acqui Savona state road built in 1813 and the railway facilitate the birth of the current town and the new church was constructed in 1941.

Tourist attractions: the Tower of San Fermo, which is close to the purple Big Bench, the Church of San Fermo of Romanesque origin and the parish Church of San Nicolao.
