The municipality arose on the right bank of the river, just upstream from the confluence with the Sesia. The town is known for the historic Palazzo Mossi, an Empire-style building located on Via Marconi. The design for the palace was commissioned in 1812 to architect Agostino Vitoli, a native of Spoleto. It is currently home to the "Book Village" (a premier showcase for out-of-print, used, and antique books) and the Po Landscape Interpretation Center, an innovative museum established by the Piedmontese Po Protected Areas Management Agency to tell the history of the area. The Parish Church of Sant'Ambrogio, in the historic center, was built in the mid-15th century at the expense of the Marquises of Monferrato.
