An agricultural municipality stretching across a hilly area among extensive vineyards, divided down the middle by the broad Ossona Valley, encompassing its upper basin. The capital sits on a hilly ridge that slopes down towards the Ossona River.
It was one of the territories subject to the temporal dominion of the Bishops of Tortona, from which its name derives. Subject, like the rest of the territory, to the expansionist ambitions of the Duchy of Milan, it was the scene of jurisdictional conflicts between the bishops and first the Spanish government and then the Savoy government. After the Napoleonic era, it definitively became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
