Cassano Spinola is a charming village located in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont, with a history rooted in the early Middle Ages. Its parish church of San Pietro Apostolo, founded between the 4th and 7th centuries, is one of the most significant sites, with a Romanesque layout with three naves and numerous subsequent renovations that enrich its artistic heritage.
Over the centuries, Cassano Spinola was dominated by the powerful Spinola family, who left an indelible mark on the area. The castle, dating back to the 9th century, was expanded in the 15th century with crenellated corner towers and massive walls, reaching its peak splendor under the Sforza and Visconti families. In the 16th century, the Spinola family preferred to move to more luxurious residences, such as the Palazzo Millelire, built in the 16th century and renovated in 1624 in Genoese style, with loggias and a large internal garden.
Today, Cassano Spinola is a place rich in history and culture, with numerous historic buildings to visit. In addition to the Castle and Palazzo Millelire, the Church of San Martino Vescovo in the hamlet of Gavazzana, the Chapel of San Rocco, and the Chapel of Sant'Antonio are also worth a visit. Archaeology enthusiasts can visit the remains of the Roman bridge on the Via Postumia in San Bartolomeo, an important artery connecting the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas.
For those visiting Cassano Spinola, it's recommended to attend the Patronal Festival of the Exaltation of the Cross, held every third Sunday in September and offering a rich program of religious, cultural, and food and wine events.
