In the heart of the Erro Valley, Cartosio is steeped in ancient traditions, rich in historical events, a village halfway up the hill dominated by a quadrangular tower of probable Saracen origin. The assumption is that Cartosio is the mythical “Caristum” - the city-fortress of the Liguri Stazielli, destroyed in the 2nd century B.C. by the armed Romans of Popillius Laenas. It was most likely of Roman origin. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the committee of Acqui until 1052, when the Emperor Enrico III yielded it together with other assets to the bishops of Acqui who owned it until they voluntarily donated it to the marquises of Ponzone. In 1218, it came under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Alessandria. The presence of extensive forests of chestnut and oak, rich in mushrooms and wildlife make it a holiday destination.

Places to visit: the tower, namely a house-tower militarily characterized by the escarpment base and the tall entrance featuring the drawbridge, the parish church of Sant’Andrea of late baroque style, rich in nineteenth-century decorations and Our Lady of Pallareta, ancient place of worship complete the visit.
