Cantalupo Ligure is a charming municipality located in the upper Borbera Valley, in the province of Alessandria. This mountain village stands out for its rich history, traditional urban structure, and deep ties to the Italian Resistance.
The name "Cantalupo" may derive from the Latin Campus ad Lucum, meaning "field near the woods," or from pre-Indo-European roots related to spring water. In the Middle Ages, the fiefdom of Cantalupo was under the control of the Genoese Spinola family, who ceded it to the Adorno marquises in 1518. In 1706, the marquisate came under the protectorate of the Savoy, while in 1776, Dernice was ceded to the Sfondrati counts of the Riviera. The municipality is characterized by a traditional urban layout, with historic hamlets such as Borgo Adorno, Zebedassi, and Prato. The stone houses and narrow streets reflect the village's evolution over the centuries.
Points of interest include the Borgo Adorno Castle, which bears witness to the town's feudal history. It's possible to visit it to appreciate its architecture and the surrounding panorama. Various churches and memorials commemorating the partisan resistance are also open to visitors.
The main festivals include the Feast of the Madonna del Carmine, celebrated from July 16th to 19th with a religious ceremony, a procession accompanied by a band, and a lottery. Several ceremonies and cultural events are also organized to commemorate the Battle of Cantalupo Ligure, which took place on February 2, 1945.
