Cabella Ligure is a municipality in the province of Alessandria, located in the Ligurian Apennines in Piedmont, near the confluence of the Liassa and Borbera rivers in the upper Borbera Valley.
Cabella Ligure is mentioned in 12th-century documents as a fiefdom of the Spinola family. Over the centuries, it passed under the control of the Genoese Spinola, Pallavicino, and Doria families. In the 19th century, it was part of the Ligurian Republic and later of the Napoleonic Empire. With the Congress of Vienna and the creation of the Duchy of Genoa, Cabella was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia, ruled by the House of Savoy. In 1861, with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the Borbera Valley was detached from Genoa and annexed to the Piedmontese province of Alessandria.
The town of Cabella is distinguished by its pastel-colored facades, a tradition reminiscent of Ligurian seaside villages. The squares and narrow streets retain their medieval layout, while the houses feature decorative elements such as window frames and string courses.
The main attractions are the Doria-Spinola-Pallavicino castle, which has medieval origins and was remodeled in the 17th century; and the church of San Lorenzo, which was built in the 17th century on the ruins of an ancient oratory and overlooks a small square. Its neoclassical façade features fluted pilasters and acanthus leaf capitals.
There are several important events for the municipality, including the patronal feast of San Lorenzo, celebrated on August 10th with religious celebrations and popular festivities; the "Curmà di pinfri," an annual gathering of all the local traditional pipers and accordionists, which takes place at the end of October in the hamlet of Capanne di Cosola; the beer festival, held in Cosola on the eve of Ferragosto (August 15th), offering an opportunity for residents and visitors to relax and socialize; The mountain festival, held in the hamlet of Dova Superiore in August, celebrates mountain traditions with cultural and gastronomic events; and the Quarantina Potato Festival, held the first weekend of September in Cosola, dedicated to the promotion of this typical local product.
