The town is located between Ovada and Gavi, in the northern Ligurian Apennines, and its territory borders the municipality of Genoa on an Apennine ridge that represents the closest point in Piedmont to the sea: just 7 kilometers.

The municipality of Bosio actually became Piedmontese only following the Rattazzi Law of 1859, enacted to redraw the administrative geography of the entire Savoy State.

The town sits at an altitude of almost 360 meters, but the highest point in its municipal territory reaches 1,080 meters.

The municipality of Bosio is part of the regionally managed Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park protected area, centered on Mount Tobbio, a particularly barren and steep mountain. Atop its summit, a church dedicated to Our Lady of Caravaggio, owned by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), has stood since 1897.

Bosio was the scene of a violent reprisal by the German and Fascist armies against partisans in 1944 at Cascina Benedicta, an ancient medieval monastery dating back to the year 1000. This site was chosen by the partisans as a refuge and meeting place, but in April 1944 the German army violently attacked the monastery, killing 75 partisans in combat, shooting 97 on the spot, and then continuing their roundup throughout the countryside and mountains. After the attack, the Germans blew up the monastery, which is now reduced to a few ruins. This site has now been secured, having become a memorial.

Just outside the village, Big Bench No. 84, painted orange, was built in 2019 in a panoramic position on the Bricco del Ronco, surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees.
