For stylistic reasons, it is dated to the 12th century. It was located near a city gate called "Porta Montis" and was later incorporated into the urban expansion of the 14th-15th centuries.
The presence of this building is linked to very late documentation, first mentioned in 1367 for the promotion of Brother Martino, rector of San Giacomo and San Michele, to rector of San Lorenzo.
In 1428, the church assumed the status of parish when Bishop Boniface permanently transferred all its prerogatives from San Michele, and in 1483, Bishop Costantino Marenco took the cassock before taking possession of the Episcopate of Acqui. The church has a main façade with broken salients, punctuated by two pilasters. The Romanesque façade is characterized by masonry made of large squared sandstone blocks in both the central and left sections, with successive brick inserts until the elevation work (the last in 1871, as can be read on the façade), once uniformed by plaster coatings, traces of which are still visible; there are also some speckles and linear incisions on the stone to better facilitate the adhesion of the mortar.
