"Il Monferrato degli Infernot" UNESCO world heritage site. Visits and useful information.

From 9 August 2026 to 8 August 2027

In 2014, UNESCO recognized the "Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato" as a World Heritage Site. The "Monferrato of the Infernots" is component number 6 of the UNESCO site.

Below and attached is useful information and contact information for organizing your visit.

The Infernots are small underground cellars entirely dug by hand from Pietra da Cantoni, the typical rock of this area of Monferrato. Constant temperature and humidity, the absence of light, ventilation, and noise once guaranteed ideal conditions for storing bottles of the finest wine.

The Infernots were mostly built between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century by local farming families. For this reason, every Infernot is unique: circular, square, or rectangular in plan, with multiple chambers or a corridor. The bottle storage spaces are continuous levels, steps, or niches; The wall finishes can be smooth or naturally cleft. Many have a central table carved directly into the rock.

The nine municipalities in the UNESCO CORE ZONE (dark pink area on the attached map) are Camagna M.to, Cella Monte, Frassinello M.to, Olivola, Ottiglio, Ozzano M.to, Rosignano M.to, Sala M.to, and Vignale M.to. In addition, there are a number of municipalities in the UNESCO buffer zone (light pink area on the attached map), including Fubine M.to, Ponzano M.to, Terruggia, and Treville.

There are both public (mostly located inside municipal buildings) and private infernots in the area. Below is a brief summary of useful information for organizing a visit to the public infernots: for more details, please download the attached document. Attached is a document listing private Infernots located within wineries, restaurants/trattorias, accommodations, associations, and other venues open to the public. We recommend contacting the venue you're interested in in advance; these Infernots are not strictly speaking private residences (to check availability for these Infernots, please contact the individual municipalities).
