08/12/2023 - 25/02/2024
2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT
Via Parma 1, Alessandria
Experience

Description

The battles are a less well-known project to the public at large, designed "for fun" by the great Milanese master of comics and illustration Guido Crepax.
After university, Crepax elaborates twenty historical battles on paper - including the battle of Marengo - in his spare time over almost ten years. The exhibition at Palazzo Cuttica is organised by the Municipality of Alessandria and the Company Costruire Insieme, curated by the Crepax Archive and Alessandra Coppa with the graphic project by Andrea Lancellotti. It has been realised with original documents specifically designed for the city of Alessandria, the battles of Marengo, Trafalgar, Waterloo, Solferino and San Martino will be on show here. The stay in Alessandria will allow you to visit the exhibition and visit the Marengo Museum with a singular set-up which reproduces the game of the battles with the soldiers made by
Crepax.

Schedule

Day 1

Arrive to Alessandria and free time to visit the exhibition in Palazzo Cuttica (from Thursday to Sunday 3 pm - 7 pm).
He started out as game creator in 1946 when he created simple but effective sport simulations with his old friends: cycling, football, athletics, motor racing and
boxing.
The game of battles is his best and most complex. After careful research in the library to read up on the battle fields, the size of the armies, the uniforms, and weapons, Crepax realised hundreds of cardboard soldiers, each was drawn and coloured back and front, cut out and glued onto pedestals of balsa wood and finally nitro-polished and balanced with a small lead square.
Crepax played the battles with his illustrious friends who included cultural personalities from Milan such as Claudio Abbado, Emilio Tadini and Umberto Eco from Alessandria.

At the end, aperitif in the city centre to discover one of the 5 drinks made with the most famous wines of the province of Alessandria: dolcetto di Ovada, Derthona Timorasso, cortese Gavi, grignolino and brachetto d'Acqui.
Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in 4* centrally-located hotel.

Day 2

Free time in the morning to take a leisurely stroll and discover the city of Alessandria: the Cathedral, the Piazza delle Poste with the Mosaics by Severini, Palatium Vetus, borgo Rovereto hub from which the city originated and the Citadel, the architectural works of Ignazio Gardella.
Visit the Borsalino Museum: more than two thousand hats on show: cinema, art and design through the most famous hat in the world. Stop off in a historic pastry shop in the beautiful Galleria Guerci, to taste the Polenta del Marengo, a sweet branded De.Co and originally prepared for Napoleon - Lunch at leisure. In the afternoon, visit the Marengo Museum and the special set-up of the Crepax exhibition (times: Saturday/Sunday from 3 pm to 7 pm) The Marengo Museum stands in the place where the famous battle took place on 18 June 1800 which saw Napoleon defeat the Austrian armies and change the history of the old continent.
