GOTH EXHIBITION IN FRASCARO - ARCHAEOLOGY OF A BARBARIAN VILLAGE
Dates
from 07 October 2023 to 07 January 2024
Description
The exhibition, curated by Egle Micheletto (already Superintendent) and Gian Battista Garbarino, presents the results of different excavation campaigns conducted between 1997 and 2020 in the municipal territory of Frascaro. It is a site of extraordinary importance for the early medieval archaeology, being one of the very few cases in which it has been possible to investigate the traces of a Goth village and necropolis. Until recent times, the archaeological knowledge of this Germanic population, so important for the history of Italy, had mostly been limited to the episodic finds or to isolated artifacts. The discovery was made during preventive archaeology interventions for several public works (the variant of Borgoratto of State Road 30 of the Bormida Valley and the embankment system of Castellazzo Bormida).
Within an academic context, the Goth town of Frascaro has earned itself well-deserved fame, also internationally. To the wider public, instead, a small sample of finds from this site had already been presented in the last fifteen years during several important exhibitions dedicated to the Barbarian period. And yet a project to promote the results of the research was missing. The materials - jewellery, ceramics, and metal objects - returned by the archaeological investigations conducted in the last twenty years in the municipal territory of Frascaro will be put on show on a large river terrace which has also preserved testimonies of pre-protohistoric settlements (from the Copper Age to the late Bronze Age, to the middle Iron Age). Here, in the late 5th century AD, a few Goth families founded a small village of wooden huts, burying their dead in a cemetery placed a short distance from the town.
