THE SCRIVIA PARK AND THE CYCLING CHAMPIONS

01/04/2024 - 31/10/2024
Villalvernia
Bike&Train

Description

A journey among the Apennine Valleys of Curone, Grue and Ossona, a territory rich in history and craft and food and wine traditions. Ideal destination for lovers of nature and good food, to discover slowly, immersing oneself in the local communities. In the lands where cycling is history, we propose cycle itineraries tailored to interests and suitable for all, enthusiasts of cycling on road or gravel and families: the sole denominator will be the emotions transmitted to you by places and people.

Note

Discover the Scrivia Nature Park, a corner of uncontaminated nature in which to admire the trees and protected animal species: the Scrivia Valley is one of the preferred migratory routes of birds flying Northwards from Africa.
The most characteristic fauna species include the rare grey heron, the little egrets, the black-winged stilt, and then European bee-eaters, Eurasian skylarks, Eurasian hoopoes, Eurasian black caps, and Eurasian jays which find an ideal habitat in the park, a re-population area. Depart from Costa Vescovato, passing through Mombisaggio to meet the River Scrivia to travel the cycling trails to Villalvernia. Stop for lunch in a restaurant immersed in greenery.
The route continues towards Gavazzana and Sant’Agata Fossili: the municipality takes its name from the chapel around which the village came to life and the name ‘fossili’ was added in the late 19th century to bear witness to the numerous fossiliferous gullies of the area. The next stop-off point is Castellania Coppi birthplace of the cycling legend Fausto Coppi: here, everything speaks of the champion from Piedmont, even the walls plastered with giant images and photos, the memorabilia, that can be seen in Casa Coppi or in the small, dedicated museum. There is the Mausoleum of the great Fausto: the Monument in honour of the Coppi brothers is a continuous pilgrim destination.
For “virtuous” cyclists it is possible to cycle the “Rampina”, a climb of approximately 3 kilometres on unpaved road, the undisputed protagonist of the historical LA MITICA race which is run each year starting and arriving in Castellania Coppi.
Return with last stop-off point in Avolasca, village on the border between the Grue and Ossona Valleys. Breathtaking view from the square in front of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
Avolasca is also famous for its woods full of truffles and mushrooms.
