Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo
The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul dates from the 12th century, was rebuilt between the 16th and the 17th century, and has undergone numerous restoration and revamping works, some of great importance.
Originally, the church had a Latin-cross plan and its facade faced towards Via D'Azeglio; at the time of Federico Barbarossa the old building was enlarged, the plan was modified, and the facade faced towards the square. The church took on its current appearance in 1588, with all probability to a project of Pellegrino Tibaldi; in 1621, the Pope granted it the title of "illustrious collegiate church".
There is evidence of the pieve from 1184, but the activities of the worksite can be dated between 1165 and 1183. The western pilasters of the intersecting square between the longitudinal body and the transept, the minor southern nave and part of the wall of the southern facade of the transept, behind the organ, decorated by a frieze of hanging arches in the centre, date to this period.
The facade, which was never been completed, preserves the original portal dated 1183 and signed by magister Albertus. The scenes of "Samson who butchers the lion" and of "David who saves the flock of sheep from the lion" are sculpted into the lunette. The capitals on the left reproduce a series of griffons, while those on the right represent scenes of life in the different seasons of the year.
The church presents a plan of five naves, the central one is supported by ten large columns of granite, the external ones are shaped like raised side chapels bordered by balustrades. The presbytery area has a semi-circular
termination.
Inside, it presents canvases of local artists (Pietro Grassi, Tirsi Capitini, Francesco Mensi). The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament also known as the "long chapel" is of great artistic interest as is the Last Supper by Alessandro Berri from Castelnuovo, nephew of Vincenzo Bandello, housed in the chapel at the end of the
left aisle.
The counter façade features a 15th-century fresco of Our Lady of Mercy, attributed to Quirico Boxilio from Tortona.
