Description

The history of Italy and of Europe is inextricably linked to Napoleon Bonaparte and to Piedmont. With his greatest victory in the Battle of Marengo in 1800, Piedmont returned under French rule and the myth of the Emperor began.

This itinerary takes us to the battlefield sites and finishes in Turin where Napoleon stayed along his journey towards Milan to be crowned King of Italy leaving important traces for the history of the city.

ALESSANDRIA The connection of the town of Alessandria with Napoleon is palpable, the town retains the star shaped medieval centre and the charm of a discreet town which was submitted to the impulse of a profound change even after the fall of Bonaparte. It was precisely in those years that the appearance of the city was rationalised and architects and engineers were educated who transformed Alessandria giving it the look it has today.

Napoleon Bonaparte always remained connected to the memory of Marengo and his body in Saint Helen's was wrapped in the blue cloak he wore on the 14 June during the Battle and was so intrinsically valuable that it was revoked in 1805 by the same First Consul.

TURIN The construction of the bridge which today leads to the Gran Madre and the opposition to the demolition of Palazzo Madama, the love of his relatives for Stupinigi and the spoliation of Venaria: the passage of Napoleon in Turin was a story of contrasts. 

On 26 June 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte, victorious survivor of the Battle of Marengo, reached Turin to set up a provisional committee of government annexing Piedmont to France with a decree. The first decision of Napoleon was to take down the gates and a large part of the city ramparts, saving only the Citadel. For the next fourteen years, Turin will be to all intents and purposes a French city, and Piedmont an administrative department at the service of Paris. It will become part of the thirty-six imperial cities and will also be given a new coat of arms: the golden bull on a light blue background will be joined by the three bees of the heraldic banner of Napoleon, symbol of hard work and sweetness.

DAY 1

The itinerary starts in Marengo in the place of the historical battle of 1800 against the Austrians with the visit to the Marengo Museum: modern multimedia contents, historical artefacts and faithful reconstructions will take you back among the troops and tell you the strategies and strokes of "luck". The visit will finish with a visit to Villa Delavo built to magnify  Napoleon's feats and to the park with the bone museum. 

Return to the town and small break for lunch in a historical pastry shop to taste the Polenta del Marengo. After lunch, walk in the centre among the historical buildings and streets of borgo Rovereto, the medieval centre of Alessandria. Crossing the scenic Meyer Bridge you reach the Citadel, the fortress which was home to the general headquarters of the Austrian troops. Visit of the fortress. Return to the centre of Alessandria, dinner in trattoria with traditional menu (beverages excluded) and overnight accommodation in centrally located hotel. 

DAY 2

After breakfast, transfer by own means to Turin (well connected by train, ticket booking on request)

Meeting with the guide and visit of the city with stops to discover the "Napoelonic" sites, namely Palazzo Madama and Piazza Gran Madre. Lunch at leisure in the centre. 

In the afternoon, transfer at leisure to Stupinigi to visit the Palazzina di Caccia (Hunting Residence), the magnificent Savoy castle designed by Juvarra. Guided tour of the castle which preserves the carriage that took Napoleon to Milan in 1805 where he was crowned King of Italy.

Return to the centre for an aperitif in the Roman Quadrilateral or to taste a "bicerin" in the historical bars of the centre. Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in centrally located hotel. 

DAY 3

After breakfast, free time for shopping and/or tour and special experiences, namely Vermouth Tour, Torino Cinema Tour, Magical Turin, Underground Turin, Turin and chocolate (estimates on request)
