PIERO LEDDI EXHIBITION. La Crocefissione. Nel cuore del mistero (The Crucifixion. At the heart of the mystery).

from 09 April 2022 to 24 July 2022

On Easter 2022, the Diocesan Museum of Tortona, in collaboration with the Association which manages the artistic inheritance of Piero Leddi, painter originally from Sebastiano Curone, is organising an exhibition on the great theme of the Crucifixion. At the centre of the exhibition is a work by Leddì, the triptych of the Crucifixion painted in the early 1980s for the Church of San Vittore of Voghera, requested by Don Piero Romersi, who wanted to embellish the holy building built in 1968 with works of art. In planning the image, Leddi confronts the most complex and variously resolved aspects in the pictorial tradition. As the work registers certify, he starts to conduct some research and the final solution is three canvases. Next to the central figure of Christ, took shape a young San Giovanni and another young man, San Sebastiano, soon to be martyred, chosen by the artist as subject in memory of his native home.
The triptych placed in the Church of Voghera some forty years ago is now reproposed together with a core of drawings by Leddi on the theme. During the Easter 2022 celebrations, the purpose of this initiative is to reinterpret a lesser known but significant page of the work of the artist from San Sebastiano and together recall Don Romersi and his commitment to furnish the church entrusted to his care with modern images.
The exhibition also includes a Wooden Crucifix of the 1600s which Leddi kept in his studio in Milan. The sculpture, which the Museum agreed to receive on deposit from the Archives of Piero Leddi, will be on show to the public for the first time. A book which is part of the artist’s library, an enthusiastic bibliophile, will also be on show. “De Cruce”, by Giusto Lipsio, is an historical-literary treatise on the torture of the cross from the origins to the abolition, in a 17th century edition of small size and a wide array of panels.

With a view to networking the territory, on Saturday 9 April and Saturday 16 April, the Diocesan Museum and Leddi Archive will join in a single itinerary. The first stop-off point will be Palazzo del Principe in San Sebastiano Curone, home to the Piero Leddi Archive, where at 15.30 it will be possible to follow the guided tour (admission and visit free of charge, booking compulsory). The second stop-off point will be the Diocesan Museum of Tortona, where the guided tour of the exhibition dedicated to Piero Leddi will start at 17.30 (booking obligatory, contribution requested €5, inclusive of admission and guide).
The itinerary will be conducted by own means.
