Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
The Venerable and Noble Arciconfraternità dei Santi Apostoli, so-called Arciconfraternità dei SS. Pietro e Paolo Apostoli, is one of the oldest religious institutions of Casale Monferrato. Founded in 1460, its headquarters are in the Church of San Pietro Apostolo of via Paleologi, built between 1727 and 1745, the year in which it was consecrated.
On Wednesday 29 June, on the day of Saint Peter and Paul, a tradition will be revived which sees the Arciconfraternità as the protagonist. Until 15 years ago, it was marked by a mass celebrated by the chaplain Don Claudio Cipriani, in the presence of all the brothers and Red Cross nurses who brought water taken from the River Po to the celebrant to be blessed.
This year, thanks to the collaboration of the Amici del Po, the tradition is revived, at the imbarcadero along Viale Lungo
At 7.30 pm, the brothers of the confraternity with the boatmen of the association and their traditional double-pointed oars and the Red Cross nurses will await the Bishop of Casale Gianni Sacchi.
Following the greetings of the general secretary of the Arciconfraternità Pietro Caire, who will update on the imminent start
of restoration works on the church, reference point for all those who worked with the river (from the gravel quarrymen to the fishermen to the washerwomen) and those of the president of Amici del Po Massimo Sarzano, the bishop will bless the water of the River Po, a symbolic gesture to guarantee good wishes to each other’s activities, which in this case merge with the common intent of protecting the traditions connected with the Po.
